A bench is the centerpiece in any hand tool woodworker's shop and is arguably the most important tool any craft-person possesses. A board possesses edges, faces, and ends. A bench’s primary function is to secure a board in one of these three planes. If your bench can’t perform all of these holding tasks, it won’t be pulling its weight in the shop. Building a bench with mass doesn’t mean that it has to be large. The vast majority of woodworkers develop their craft in single car garages or small shops. I am no different. Within this blog series, I will attempt to capture my thoughts and processes behind building my bench. Hopefully, you will glean a few pieces of information from this blog series that will assist in building a bench of your own.
